RAYMOND PHILLIP 'PHIL' RHYANS

2433 Stone Drive, entered into rest on Monday, May 12, 2008 at his residence. He was born January 1, 1944 to the late Pleas and Sallie Brown Rhyans. He attended school in Johnson City, had a Beauty Shop in Johnson City for a number of years, and retired from CORE.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include; a son, Alex Dabner, two brothers, Richard Rhyans, Denver, CO, and Charles "Bo" Rhyans, Kenton, OH, four sisters, Nivova Green, Asheville, NC, Amelia Earnest, Garland, TX, Opal Webb, Cleveland, OH, and Rosa Malone, Johnson City, TN. Several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 4 PM, Thursday, May 15, 2008 at the home of a niece, Sarah Hill, 2307 Lakeview Drive.

 HATTIE MAE WARREN HILL
 

417 Wilson Ave. entered into rest on Thursday, May 8, 2008 at her home. She was born on May 12, 1913 in the Flatrock Community of Kershaw County. She was the daughter of the late Mr. Limbrick Warren and the late Mrs. Rosa Brown Warren. Mrs. Hill moved from Camden, SC to New York City, NY and after so many years, she moved to Johnson City, TN.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Homer Hill, a son, Ernest Conway, four brothers, Mr. Frank Warren. Willie Warren, Charlie Warren, and Otis Warren; three sisters, Mrs. Mamiie Kelly, Mrs. Anna Austin, and Mrs. Marie Tew; and four sister-in-law, Gazella Warren, Joan Warren, Sally Warren, and Ernestine Warren.

Her survivors are, are two daughters and three sons, one deceased son. She leaves behind, Eloise Hurd, Janet Hill, Joseph Conway, Wayne Hill and David Hill. She also leaves eight grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren and eight great, great, grandchildren and all the nieces, nephews, and cousin are in memory of mommy,

She is going to be missed by all of the ones who loved her and some that knew her will.

She was a lady who brought joy and laughter into the world, she never saw a sick day, was there for everyone in need. She always made you laugh when you didn’t want to. Love you and miss mother, always.

FUNERAL SERVICES

will be held at 7 PM, Thursday, May 15, 2008, at Friendship Baptist Church, 522 West Main St. with Dr. C. H. Charlton officiating, Graveside services will be held at 11 AM Friday at College Hill Cemetery, Jonesborough, TN. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 PM Thursday at the church prior to the services.

ESTHER  BEARD

 709 East Fairview Ave. entered into eternal rest on Saturday, April 26, 2008.  She was the daughter of the late Thomas Alexander Beard and Pauline Holly Beard.  She was born in Johnson City, Tennessee on May 22, 1926.  She was preceded in death by her three sisters and her brother. 

 

Esther moved to Flint, Michigan at a young age, and spent many years there.  She later moved to Brooklyn, New York, and lived there with one of her sisters.  She returned to Johnson City in 1973 to take care of her mother.

 

Esther loved her family, she loved to cook, she loved to travel, and she loved her church, Thankful Baptist Church, where she was a faithful member.  She had a host of friends reflecting the love she shared for everyone.

 

She is survived by her two nieces Lynda Solomon Bacon and Joanne Taylor Tipton, a nephew,  John Beard.  She also has several great nieces and great nephews.  Carolyn Newman, Annie Mae Hall, and Carolyn Brady were special friends.

 

Esther will be greatly missed by us all, but we can find peace and comfort in knowing that she is at home with the Lord.

FUNERAL SERVICES

 will be held at 1 PM, Thursday, May 1,  2008 at Thankful Baptist Church, 1501 East Watauga  Ave. with Rev. C. D. Johnson officiating. The family will receive friends from 12 noon until 1 PM prior to the services at the church and at other times at the residence.

JOHN ARTHUR ROBERTSON
 

died on Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at the V. A. Medical Center, Mountain Home was born in New York City on 24 June 1952 to William and Ruth Robertson. He attended elementary school in Brooklyn, N. Y., and graduated from high school in Hawaii. John joined the Army in November 1974, served with infantry units in West Berlin, Germany and Korea. He obtained the rank of Sergeant. He left the Army after ten years of service in August 1984. He was employed with American Water Heater in Johnson City for eighteen years. He was a member of the Veterans of Wars, Post 2108 of Johnson City.

Mr. Robertson was survived by many friends and adopted family members and his very special friend, Velma Parker.

 
GRAVESIDE SERVICES
 
will be held at 11 AM,  Thursday, April 17, 2008 at the  V. A. National Cemetery, Mountain Home with full military honors.

GWENDOLYN  GREENLEE

 

88, of 206 Depot Street, Jonesborough, TN left this life on Sunday, April 13, 2008 after a brief illness.  She was born December 16, 1919 in Jonesborough, TN to Dock Perry and Carrie Stewart Perry.  She was a faithful member of Bethel Christian Church in Jonesborough, TN. 

 

 Grandma Gwen, as she was affectionately known by all, lived her full life in Jonesborough.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Corene Clark, Hattie Perry, Mary Nell Wright, Deo Russell, and Louise Perry, and her brothers Curtis Russell, and Hiawatha Perry. 

She is survived by her husband Alfred of the home, and her children, Joann Fitzgerald, of Jonesborough, Harold (Frances) Stevenson of Jonesborough, Herbert (Diane) Stevenson of St Louis, MO, Starlin Perry of Jonesborough, Gwendolyn Greenlee-Quinn Of Shalimar, FL, Karan (Noah) Glispie Bluff City, Tn, William Alfred (Sandra) Greenlee of Huntsville, AL, James (LaMonica) Greenlee, Kapaun Air Station, Germany, and Marilyn Bowers, Morristown, TN. She is survived by several nieces and nephews.  She is also survived by many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grand children.  Anyone who knew Grandma Gwen would tell you she was a very unique and loving person.  Grandma Gwen will be truly missed by her family, church family, and the many friends that she had made during her life time.

MEMORIAL SERVCIES

  will be held at 3 PM, Thursday, April 17, 2008 at Bethel Christian Church, 701 Depot Street, Jonesborough, TN, with Rev. BARBARA STEARNS WALTERS

age 74, of Johnson City, Tennessee, died April 5, following a challenging illness. She was born in Washington, D. C. on November 29, 1933. She was preceded in death by her parents, Eric Swain Stearns and Alma Carey Stearns; and a brother-in-law, Carl J. Wenzinger.

She is survived by her loving husband of fifty-four years, Thomas L. Walters, of the home, a son, Martin Bradley Walters, and his wife, Amy Wallace Walters, of Jonesborough, Tennessee, a daughter, Allison Walters Ellis and her husband, Nathan Ellis, of Newark Valley, New York, a brother, Russell Carey Stearns and his wife, Marilyn Pfaender Stearns, of Rockville, Maryland, a sister, Dorothy Stearns Wenzinger, of Johnson City, New York; five grandchildren, many nephews, nieces and loved ones and friends.

Barbara was a consecrated Christian, a gifted musician and caring individual to family and friends. Closest to Barbara’s heart was the love of family and friends, the beauty of nature, the glory on music and a quiet reverence for everyday miracles. She always said that "The best things in life were not things", but faith, hope, charity, love, peace, optimism, and joy.- Precious gifts that can be ours when we open our hearts and believe.

Barbara and her family were deeply appreciative of the care given her by the Johnson City Medical Center, Mountain States Health Alliance & Hospice, as well as by family members, members of Our Saviour Evangelical Lutheran Church and loyal friends.                                                          

MEMORIAL SERVICES

will be held at Our Saviour Evangelical Lutheran Church at 212 Sunset Drive in Johnson City, Tennessee on Saturday, April 19, 2008 at 2 :30 PM and at a later date in Johnson City, New York. Memorials in her honor may be made to Our Saviour Evangelical Lutheran Church’s Memorial Fund for Worship and Music, Sunday School and Bible School; St Jude’s Children Hospital in Johnson City, Tennessee, and Mountain States Health Alliance Hospice in Johnson City, Tennessee.

ELIZABETH "AUNTIE'  YOUNG

 

 

             93, 308 Dyer St. died Saturday, April 5, 2008 at NHC Healthcare following an extended illness. She was born on July 20, 1914 in Abbeyville, SC to the parents of the late Martha Smith Belton and Willie Hart Smith.

            She was a faithful member and Mother of the Church in which she helped start, Greater Love Church of God in Christ, where the pastor was the late Elder Roger M. Charles.

            In addition to her parents she was preceded   in death by her husband, Rasberry Young, five sisters, and two brothers, a grandson, Andrel Anderson, a special cousin, Mrs. Ethel Ervin and two special family friends, the late Mrs. Beatrice Bailey and Mrs. Bessie Wells.

            Survivors include; four daughters, Jospehine Anderson, Georgia Fields, Betty (Eustis) Carter and Mary Anderson, all of Johnson City, a sister, Marie Johnson, Baltimore, MD, three special nieces, Nancy (Albert) Wheeler, and Amy (James) Howard,  Waynesville, NC, Delores (Thomas) Page, Charlotte, NC, the Beatrice Bailey family, the Bessie Wells family, fifteen grandchildren and twenty-four great grandchildren and seven great, great, grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

       will be held at 12 noon, Saturday, April 12, 2008 at St. Paul A. M. E. Zion Church, Millard at Welbourne St. with Elder Hugh Hale officiating. Burial to follow at Westlawn Cemetery. MICHAEL KHARI GAMBLE

 was born October 16, 2007, to Leslie K. Goddard, of Johnson City, TN, and Jerome S. Gamble, Sr., of Brooklyn, NY, at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC.  Michael went with God on March 25, 2008, at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC.  He will be greatly missed by many friends of the family and loved ones.

 

Michael is survived by his parents, grandparents: Karen Goddard Jones and Robert H. Goddard, both of  Johnson City, TN, and Linda Gamble of  Washington, DC, and siblings: Brittany Thompson, Dae’Sean Tibbs and Jerome S. Gamble, Jr., of the Metropolitan Area.  Michael is also survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins.

 

MEMORIAL SERVICES 

 

 will be held at 4 PM, Sunday, April 6, 2008, at Thankful Baptist Church, 1501 East Watauga Ave. Johnson City, TN.  Receiving friends will be held from 3 to 4 PM, prior to the services and at other times  at the home of the grandmother, Karen Goddard Jones, 400 Sunset Dr #L59, Johnson City, TN.

PAUL K. SWEPSON

 309 Peach Blossom Court. On Tuesday afternoon, April 1, 2008, Our Precious Lord came to take Paul K. Swepson home. Paul was born on November 3, 1937, was a Langston High School graduate and a U. S. Air Force veteran. He was retired from the Johnson City Post Office.

He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur Swepson, his mother, Bertha Swepson, sister, Bobbie V. Campbell and his step-daughter, Audrey Livingston.

He leaves to mourn his passing; his wife, Bertha Swepson, two sons, Dwayne Forney, Jonesborough, TN and Jeff (Sandie) Forney, Gilbert, AZ, five step children, Albert Sams, Randall Sams, Rondall Sams, Charlene Bennett and Regina (Joe) Webster, all of Johnson City, TN, a special son-in-law, Anthony Livingston, fifteen grandchildren and three great grandsons, a special cousin, Glenn (Mildred) Bonner, special friends, Anne Hall and Katie Bailey, and a host of other relatives and friends.

 will be held at 12:45 PM, Friday, April 4, 2008 at St. Paul A. M. E. Zion Church, corner of Millard St. and Welbourne St., with Pastor James W. Reddick Jr. officiating. Burial to follow at the V. A. ADELAIDE FAW (ADDIE) McMILLIAN
 

 95, died Thursday, April 10, 2008, in Redlands, CA. She was born in Johnson City, TN on July 26, 1912 to Charles and Maggie Faw, her loving parents. She was educated in Johnson City schools and became a devoted member of St. Paul AME Zion church. In 1928 she married her childhood sweetheart Walter Lee McMillan. The couple moved from Tennessee to Cleveland, OH in 1943, where they raised their family of four sons. She worked outside the home for a period of time, but then chose to devote her time to care for her aged mother and raise her young sons. Addie and Walter moved to Redlands, California in 1970, where they spend the remainder of their lives.

She was preceded in death by her husband Walter in 1996. She is survived by her sons Hensel L. McMillan (Lennidine) of Adelanto, California; Charles A. McMillan (Valencia) of Shaker Heights, OH; Millard H. McMillan of Phoenix, AR; and Paul J. McMillan (Patricia) of Redlands, CA; twenty grandchildren; thirty-two great grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews; and many friends. There will be a grave side service at Montecito Memorial Park in Colton, CA on Monday, April 21, 2008 at 11:00 AM.
